A tribute to Man Ray; "The most inventive photographic artist of the 20th century".

Man Ray (August 27, 1890–November 18, 1976; born Emmanuel Radnitzky), was an American artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. Perhaps best described simply as a modernist, he was a significant contributor to both the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. Best known in the art world for his avant-garde photography, Man Ray produced major works in a variety of media and considered himself a painter above all. He was also a renowned fashion and portrait photographer.

While appreciation for Man Ray’s work beyond his fashion and portrait photography was slow in coming during his lifetime, especially in his native United States, his reputation has grown steadily in the decades since.

In 1999, ARTnews magazine named him one of the 25 most influential artists of the 20th century, citing his groundbreaking photography as well as "his explorations of film, painting, sculpture, collage, assemblage, and prototypes of what would eventually be called performance art and conceptual art" and saying "Man Ray offered artists in all media an example of a creative intelligence that, in its 'pursuit of pleasure and liberty,'" — Man Ray’s stated guiding principles — "unlocked every door it came to and walked freely where it would."^[1]

So you just realized you are down to your last twenty bucks while visiting Vegas and uncle Bill, who you just called for a loan doesn't remember you due to Alzheimer's. You have no bride to wed and the five dollar "all you can eat buffets"? well, just found out they are a thing of the past. Vegas can be an unforgiving place for those with empty pockets, but not all is lost! you can still grab your camera and head out for a "Rendezvous" with gambling history. The Neon Museum better known as the "Boneyard" is located just north of Downtown Las Vegas, across the street from Cashman Field, just minutes from where all the tourist action takes place. The Neon Boneyard comprises of two city blocks of old "glitzy junk" or vintage Americana representing an are gone by, a place where you come face to face with iconic symbols from a glamorous past.
The Neon Boneyard is a cemetery for all things electric and forgotten. All these signs were replaced by new and vibrant ones representing a new Vegas that is as corporate as Silicon Valley can be. While some of the signs are being restored to their original glory, most of them are laid to rest forever baking in the desert sun. All the museum ask from it's visitors is a kind donation (tax deductible) along with a pledge and a promise not to use the images for commercial use (rates for professional photographer are slightly astronomical), and of course reservations are highly recommended.
The Neon Boneyard is sure to give you a different perspective and a completely different view of the Las Vegas history. It is good clean fun and it is something you can safely show your wife when you get back home to Iowa from your "stressful" business trip.

Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso, depicting the Nazi German bombing of Guernica, Spain, by twenty-eight bombers, on April 26, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. The attack killed between 250 and 1,600 people, and many more were injured.

A huge mural had already been commissioned from Picasso by the Spanish Republican government to decorate the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris International Exposition (the 1937 World's Fair in Paris). The bombing of Guernica provided Picasso with the inspiration for the mural which he had previously lacked. The striking black and white photographs that appeared in newspapers within days after the bombing made such a lasting impact that, within fifteen days, Picasso began work on the final canvas for the mural. "Guernica" became an iconic work after touring overseas while raising awareness about the civil war in Picasso's homeland, Spain. It also foreshadowed the horrors that would occur only a few years later in World War II. The work has come to represent the suffering of war victims and acts as a reminder of the horrors they have survived. It has surpassed the limits of the event which inspired it, becoming a timeless icon for all generations to ponder.

Picasso said as he worked on the mural:

“

The Spanish struggle is the fight of reaction against the people, against freedom. My whole life as an artist has been nothing more than a continuous struggle against reaction and the death of art. How could anybody think for a moment that I could be in agreement with reaction and death? ... In the panel on which I am working, which I shall call Guernica, and in all my recent works of art, I clearly express my abhorrence of the military caste which has sunk Spain in an ocean of pain and death.^[1]

Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park,^[5] New York City (1962) — A scrawny boy, with the left strap of his jumper awkwardly hanging off his shoulder, tensely holds his long, thin arms by his side. Clenching a toy grenade in his right hand and holding his left hand in a claw-like gesture, his facial expression is maniacal. Arbus captured this photograph by having the boy stand while moving around him, claiming she was trying to find the right angle. The boy became impatient and told her to "Take the picture already!" This photo was also used, without permission, on the cover of punk band SNFU's first studio album, And No One Else Wanted to Play.

Musical influence: David Bowie's "Low"

Back in the late seventies when I first discovered the music of David Bowie, I never expected it to influence me as much as it has to this date. "Low" a recording created in 1976 while rehabilitating himself from a destructive cocaine addiction in Berlin Germany speaks of painful days fill with boredom and anxiety; Bowie managed to use his pain as a launching pad for creativity. Lauded by many critics as his best creative work, "Low" has been a source of inspiration for many artists ever since.

Thank you for visiting MX's Foto Welt, I just came back from Mt. Charleston, Nevada, It was quite surprising to find out that there is this beautiful, peaceful place just outside Las Vegas; seven thousand feet above sea level it gets cold up here. This tiny town has a wonderful "Alpine" feel to it, surrounded by cottages and log cabins. This town gave me an opportunity to have a field trip without driving far (just a 45 minute drive from the strip) and without breaking the piggy bank. So go out check out your surrounding towns; you may get a surprise.

Enhance your spiritual life through Photography

Can't wait for the week to end? have a strong desire to return home and grab your camera? it is perfectly normal; it is your inner self craving some "creative time". Remember when you were a kid? you probably spent countless hours immersed playing with the coloring book your parents gave you, focused, inspired and most of all happy; this is an ever evolving process because your soul never rests, it needs to create and re-invent itself. Creativity is a very important part of the evolution of the human soul, unfortunately this emotion gets shelved by the daily grind; going to work, driving your kids around and so on. How do you feel when you venture out with your camera? do you feel exhilarated? do you get focused? do you feel like your life falls back into perfect harmony? well probably it does!. You see, in my case photography gave me a new lease and perspective in life after suffering a heart attack (age 35), it made me realize my own mortality and helped my shift my focus into new horizons. Photography will always take you outside your routine and will enrich your existence, don't suppress it your inner self wants it this way; nourish your talents and you will reap the rewards for years to come.

Just came back from an unexpected trip to the Caribbean to take care of family matters; thank God everything is well, I'm now looking forward to start working on my studio. I am currently shopping around for strobes and flashes, there are many choices out there which makes it a little hard to decide right now, if you have any suggestions please let me know. After working as a Food Stylist for some time I have decided to do everything on my own; so no more having to deal with "Divas holding cameras" I'll take the pictures myself.
